Reminder to Self

Chang Park | AUG 28

I got to my computer yesterday to draft an email when something caught my eye and made me smile.

Even though it's slightly cringe-worthy, I wanted to share it with you...

...This little Post-it note I stuck on my desk, which says:

Morning!

Mindful. Movement. Mindset.

I don't even remember how long it's been there, encouraging me to start my day on the right foot. I'm sure I heard someone else say they always start their morning like this with these exact reminders (I think it was Dr Chatterjee, perhaps on a podcast, to my memory 🤔) and remember thinking - That's a wonderful idea. I'll steal that.

It's not the only Post-it note I have around.

If I lift my head, the wall above my computer is peppered with coloured Post-its, reminders, quotes, and pictures of the many people I love. I'm afraid to say it's all very 1998 - I don't have any Athena posters anymore, but there's still plenty of bluetack pulling off the plaster, and my corkboard is still going strong (the corkboard is much too embarrassing to show you TBH 😂)

I don't know why, but it feels cringey to admit this habit of mine.

I feel like by now, as a woman in her 40s, I should know how to start my day, what to work on, and how to focus when I stand at my desk. Why do I feel like a teenager, somehow a little childish, to still need these bright scraps of paper around me?

But I have to admit to you—I like my little reminders—these self-written, sweet pocket bombs of encouragement—a reminder to come back to what I care about when the day gets ahead of me or I get caught up in something stressful.

Sometimes, I ignore them. Sometimes, I stop and see them. Sometimes, they help. Sometimes, they are so helpful that I wish I could put more up, put them everywhere—on the fridge, on my bathroom mirror. (I spare my poor husband this, though, at least!)

I'm curious to know: If there was something you needed to remind yourself of multiple times a day (with or without Post-its), what would it be?

As I think about our yoga classes, I'm reminded (see what I'm doing here? ha) that all I really do is offer you reminders to do the stuff you might need some help being reminded about!!!

...To slide the heel back, to extend the lumbar, to soften the shoulders.

Just reminders.

And what do you need to remind yourself of most while you're on the mat?

...To be kind, work hard, be present?

Okay, I've just seen something else.

I will share a small piece of my corkboard—a couple of reminders that aren't too embarrassing.

You can take them if you want—for class or, as always, for life!

Begin Again, and Less but Better!

Not bad reminders, wouldn't you say?

Let's practice 😉
